Why Does Our Universe Have Three Dimensions? →
discoverynews: Japanese scientists think they may have an explanation for how a three-dimensional universe emerged from the original nine dimensions of space. They describe their new supercomputer calculations simulating the birth of our universe in a forthcoming paper in Physical Review Letters. keep reading This makes me want to go back and re-read Brian Greene’s “The Fabric...

Ringing Finally Ended, but There’s No Button to... →
The unmistakably jarring sound of an iPhone marimba ring interrupted the soft and spiritual final measures of Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 at the New York Philharmonic on Tuesday night. The conductor, Alan Gilbert, did something almost unheard-of in a concert hall: He stopped the performance. But the ringing kept on going, prompting increasingly angry shouts in the audience directed at the...

Why did the hipster burn his mouth on the pizza?
bananascout: He ate it before it was cool. This falls into the same category as knock-knock jokes: bad, but funny. You know you shouldn’t laugh, but you do.

What'cha doin', bird-bones?

spoonifurishere: Listening to The National and am reminded of the few fans that told me the whole “he does that at every show” in sneering voices. Oh, cool… BOY does it grind my gears when people do this. I’ve seen The National 4 times and each show was fun and distinct in one way or another. Does any set of performers have things they “do” as part of their performance? Sure....

sweetupndown: you thought I didn’t really notice. But I did. I wanted to high-five you. Via Shakesville. This is a thing that happened in the world that gives me hope for the future. I also hope both of these kids are safe today.

Nerds and Male Privilege →
Besides his unfortunate avoidance of the word “feminist,” I’d say this is a pretty cogent piece: Geek society prides itself on being explicitly counter-culture; nerds will crow about how, as a society, they’re better than the others who exclude them. They’ll insist that they’re more egalitarian; geeks hold tight to the belief that geek culture is a meritocracy, where concepts...

spoonifurishere: Up in the Air is strangely fascinating. Has a lot of those… little moments. The adults running into the hotel barefoot and wet and laughing and drunk. All of the airport scenes. It’s nice. Drying the wet cardboard cutout in his hotel bathroom.  I quite enjoyed this movie when I saw it in theaters. I should probably watch it again.

j0e: Holiday music has no effect on me. Holiday music has the opposite effect on me that it’s supposed to—especially when I’m hearing a smooth jazz rendition of “Winter Wonderland” while it’s 65° and sunny out.
